The Busan–Geoje Fixed Link is an 8.2-kilometre fixed connection between the South Korean port city of Busan and Geoje Island. The project was developed to significantly improve regional accessibility and dramatically reduce travel time between the two locations. Whereas the journey previously took several hours by road or ferry, the link now provides a fast and efficient route for passenger and freight traffic.

Project Description

A key component of the project is the 3.2-kilometre-long concrete immersed tunnel. At the time of its opening, it was the deepest immersed road tunnel in the world, located approximately 48 metres below sea level. It was also one of the longest immersed tunnels worldwide.

MH Poly was responsible for the complete design of the immersion pontoons used for the controlled immersion of the tunnel elements, subject to approval by Lloyd’s Register. MH Poly also designed the deck layout and the hoisting and lifting system, which were essential for positioning the tunnel elements safely and accurately during installation.
